Going Green with Smitha Ramakrishna

Smitha Ramakrishna, 15, was one of ten in the nation chosen for the President’s Environmental Youth Award given by the Environmental Protection Agency. She received the honors in a special White House awards ceremony hosted by President Bush for a project that helped deliver clean water to the world.

This is the kind of idea we are looking for in the Going Green Challenge. Ideas that can help improve the environment, whether they are currently in action or plans to make something happen. All ideas are welcome - measurable ones are even better.

Smitha founded a kids chapter of a global nonprofit organization that aims to improve the lives of India’s poor children. Her club has raised funds through walkathons and bake sales to deliver access to clean water for underprivileged children in India. In 2005, she founded AWAKE (Arizona Water Activists Karing for the Environment). AWAKE’s activities have helped raise water conversation awareness and sanitation issues in Arizona. This is the kind of eco-friendly teen we need to hear more from!
