Teen Poet Turned Revolutionary

One of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th-century started writing poetry when she was 11 years old. She became a legend in her own time as a poet of great acclaim.

She was born Anna Gorenko near Odessa, Ukraine in 1889. She lived through and wrote about some of the most incredible historic times in Russian history. She witnessed the Bolshevik Revolution, Stalin, the Purges, and both World Wars. She was persecuted for her links to pre-Revolutionary Russia.

Anna used a pseudonym in order to not bring shame upon her family! Being a female poet would have been considered shameful.  When she was 16, her father abandoned the family and she went away to school.

Akhmatova's first collection of poetry, Vecher, appeared in 1912. She gained a wider fame two years later with Chyotki. She was wildly popular until her poetry came under scrutiny during Stalin's regime. Once the the Bolsheviks were in complete control of the country, was to eliminate all vestiges of pre-revolutionary culture. Poetry like Akhmatova's was no longer welcome in the new communism. The government formally established "Socialist Realism" as the guideline for all of the arts. She continued her work through this time and upon Stalin's death, her work was enjoyed again.

An 11 year old poet grew up to be one of the great literary minds of an amazing course of events. You could be a great poet, world-changing idea maker or inventors too. Visit www.bkfk.com to learn more.
