Oh how I love drinking tea! And to think there's more to those tea bags than just enjoying their flavor. Here's a totally amazing artsy touch to tea bags, not to mention an amazing idea that is helping a community grow.
Artists from Capetown, South Africa, paint on recycled tea bags. They collect used tea bags, which are first dried and then emptied of leaves and carefully ironed. And finally they paint each tea bag, transforming them into colorful artwork that include coasters, greeting cards, candles, ornaments, magnets and more. The artists are able to support their living by selling their artwork.
Who's the mind behind the cause?
Jill Heyes started "Original T-Bag Designs" in 2000 to help the local community in South Africa. Her story began in 1996 when she moved to South Africa from England. Click here to read Jill's story .
Where do all the tea bags come from?
People donate dried tea bags, mailing small packages to Original T-Bags Designs (they have an office in NYC). A Virginia teenager, Moira Callahan, collected 14789 tea bags!
